Supported
Browsers:
There
are many browsers, and we have not tested the obscure
ones. However, our lists (and the Trade Management
Calculator™ ) seem to display and work properly
in the following major browsers, subject to the more
detailed comments below:

Browsers
all handle html code and different scripting languages
(Javascript, Ajax, etc.) in varying fashion. This
is why some things will not work or display properly
in certain browsers. Thus, there is no "best"
browser. Web businesses that are on the ball attempt
to design their sites for cross-platform viability,
but this is more of a vision than a truly achievable
goal. We at CallWriter.com try to achieve this, but
we do not have the staff to engineer every thing we
build to meet every quirk of every major browser.
And those quirks can change with a new browser release.
Then too, some browsers just are not there yet. IE
is a prime example.
Below
we discuss the major browsers with regard to how CallWriter.com
works in them. Keep in mind that you can run multiple
browsers on your computer, although one of them has
to be set as the default. Before downloading any
browser, please read its system requirements and make
sure it is compatible with your operating system and
computer.
Mozilla
Firefox (PC and Mac).
Our site, lists and Research Page look and
work great in Firefox, with the fewest display and
functionality issues. We use Firefox
at CallWriter for this reason.
Firefox for Mac. Firefox is faster than IE when
dealing with scripts such as Javascript. While Microsoft
slept, FF crept in and took over 25% of the worldwide
browser market (yes, 25%), and climbing every day.
Safari
(PC and Mac).
Our site, lists and Research Page also look
and work great in Safari.
Though known as a Mac OS, you can download the
Windows version here.
Google
Chrome (PC).
This is the fastest of all browsers, and in fact is
a lot more than a browser. Our site, lists and Research
Page look and work great in Google
Chrome. It's look and operating logic is more
than a little different from other browsers, and this
puts some users off. Mac version coming.
Internet
Explorer (PC).
Our site generally, looks best in
Internet Explorer 6, 7 or 8.
However, we have noticed that our lists sometimes
do not work properly in IE 8 in particular. For example,
our lists' show/hide function
often does not always work properly in IE 7 and IE
8.
If certain column groups remain showing when they
should be hidden, 10-to-1 you are using IE, which
is the slowest and crashiest of the major browsers.
Download
IE8. Download
IE7.
TIP:
most of the time, login problems are reported by members
using IE. We're just saying...
Netscape.
Based on limited testing, our site seems to work properly
in Netscape 9. However, it is no longer officially
supported and is used only by die-hard fans. You can
still get it, but it is, um, rather behind the times.
But this is what its fans like about it.
Opera
(PC
and Mac).
Our site and lists look and
work great in Opera
and Opera is quite fast. However, Opera
does not like our Reseach Page and usually
will not display it - it seems not to get past the
loading stage. Opera
for Mac.
Not
Tested:
Camino, Flock, Omniweb, Cruz, Flare, Stainless, iCab,
Sunrise, Shira/Demeter, Sea Monkey, Netscape versions
earlier than 9, and many others.
Javascript:
To use
CallWriter properly, you must have Javascript
enabled in your browser. This is a
setting in your browser, not in your operating system
(ex:, Mac or WindowsXP). The pull-down menu system
for the Real Time Lists™ and certain other things
on CallWriter.com will not work without Javascript.
This setting
is usually under the Tools menu item
at the top of the browser, and you usually need to
choose the Options or Internet Options items below
Tools. In Google Chrome, click on the little wrench
icon at the browser's upper right-hand corner.
Popups:
CallWriter
pages do not open as popups, though many pages such
as the Research Page, Trade Management Calculator
and educational articles open in new
windows. That's not the same as a
popup, and you do not
need to authorize popups in order to use CallWriter.
Most browsers
give you the option (TOOLS>Options) to deal with
popups in different ways, not all of them the same:
- allow
all popups,
- block
ad popups
- block
all popups,
- ask
you before blocking a popup, and perhaps
- enter
exceptions for trusted sites from whom
you allow popups.
Our Research
Page does not
serve popups, but some of the sites bundled into it
do serve them up. If you are getting ad popups from
a third party, either block ad popups (if your browser
allows this) or simply block all popups. Honestly,
there are not many you want.
Clearing
Browser Junk:
Every
time you load (open) a web page, you are downloading
the images it contains, and maybe scripts and other
things. Popularly known as "temporary internet
files" or "cache." these downloaded
things are cached,
which means they stay on your hard drive.
These
files aren't bad things, but they are junk and after
a certain point, they "clog
up" your browser. One of the
problems this can cause is to cache (save) a CallWriter
list, so it looks as though it is not updating when
it is running fine. Here is how to clear
the cache from your browser:
Under
the Tools
menu item at the top of the browser, select from the
pull-down menu either Internet Options (IE),
Clear Recent History (Firefox) orDelete Private
Data (Opera). In Google Chrome, click on the
little wrench icon and select Clear Browsing Data.
Here's what you should clear :
- Browsing
History (if you want - this is the history
of sites visited)
- Download
History (if you want - this is a list of
files, not junk, you have downloaded)
- Cache,
also known as Temporary Internet Files
- Form
and search history (unless you want to
save these)
By the
way, it helps your browser run better and smoother
to periodically clear these things, especially the
cache. You should do so at least once a week.
When you cannot log in to CallWriter, this is the
first fix to try.
WARNING:
Please be careful
when deleting junk not to wipe out these things:
- Form
data (if you use this to auto-fill forms
on webpages)
- Saved
passwords (you will regret this)
- Cookies
(you will really regret this)
- Authenticated
Sessions (things you have open at the time
that require login)
Some browsers
are sneaky - if you just click the CLEAR button, you'll
clear everything. You sometimes have to click a button
or link named something like OPTIONS to clear only
what your want. This is an issue with Google Chrome
in particular.
TIP:
Clear your cache and other junk at
least once a week.At least once a week you also should
close all open applications and shut
down your computer. This clears out
certain gremlins that build up the longer the computer
runs.
Research
Page:
Our Research
Page is designed to open in a new window
- so that it does not take you away from our list
page or home page. However, if it is instead opening
in another tab instead of a separate window, you will
need to set your browser so the Research Page opens
in a new window, not
a new tab. You can change this setting
by going into the browser preferences under
the Tools menu item and choosing
to have everything open in a new window.
Our Research
Page can be open in only one window at a time.
As you navigate to different research sources (ex:
Dividends, D. Chart, etc.), the Research
Page will simply switch to the new information, since
only one instance of the Research Page can be open
in the same browser at one time.
TIP:
Keep the Research Page open, so you can switch between
research links without having to keep re-opening the
Research Page - this will speed up your evaluation
of potential trades.
TIP:
You can run multiple browsers at once on your computer.
If you want to have the Research Page open in more
than one window (ex: one for a daily chart, another
for a weekly chart), you will need to open a different
browser and run both browsers at the same time. Open
the Real Time Lists™ and our Research Page in
both browsers.
Note that
our Research Page does not seem to function in the
latest version of Opera. It does
not seem to load properly.
Issues:
Our members'
website requires you to log in. Our most
common support issue is members being unable to log
in to the CallWriter.com members' website, although
their accounts are active. The most common culprit
is the member's failure to delete
cache (temporary internet files),as
discussed above.
When you
cannot log in to CallWriter, deleting cache is the
first fix to try. If this does not work, close the
browser and reopen it. You may have multiple browser
windows open, so be sure you close them all.
If you
still cannot log in, close all applications you have
running and shut down your computer (don't restart
- shut it down). This is what techs refer to as a
cold boot. Then restart it, open your browser again
and try logging in.
If these
three fixes do not work, it likely is a problem on
our end.
Note that
even if you cannot log in to the CallWriter.com members'
site, you should always be able to get into the My
Account utility with your username and password. |
